The Gaming Industry is a Gamble After All
AOL posts about the dire situation regarding gambling in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Too many places to gamble and not enough players. According to the article there are three casinos that will be closing in September, The Showboat, Revel, and Trump Plaza will be going dark, maybe not forever but for a while for sure.
One thing is to look at casinos on TV and its another thing to look at it closely. Miami has added gaming at its parimutuel facilities and Dania Jai Alai which was the last player to the party is closing temporarily they say for remodeling. The slot machines were supposed to be the savior of the parimutuel industry and just recently Calder Race Course cut back the days it will have racing to the state minimum of forty days so that it can keep their slots.
One thing is for sure, the slot machines have improved the looks at all the parimutuel facilities somewhat. A new paint job, more entertainment activities, new carpets, new jobs for some and there is still horse racing, jai alai, and dog racing. Higher stakes poker is also a money maker The clientele that are at the facilities at 9:00 am are usually given $5.00 in free play, a free game of bingo, inexpensive beer and free sodas.
A few dollars from the Social Security check is just robbing one local business to support another. Longer term players just get ground down.
There are too many people that spend money at casinos that should go to rent, food, health care, or savings and there is the occasional story about the parent that goes into to gamble and leaves a youngster in the car. People also piss money away playing the lottery and the state runs that one as well
Touristy places like Atlantic City need things for people to do when they get tired of the beach or the boardwalk.
This is an admission that gambling may not bring the STEM job creating engine we all talk about, but it sure is the purest form of voluntary taxation you may ever find.
The competition in Miami is heating up. I get more mail from the local casinos than from any other source. It's tempting but its also becoming been there, done that activity.
