California Chrome Is THE Horse of the Year but there is more.

California Chrome was America's horse last year in spite of losing the Belmont and a chance to be the first Triple Crown Winner since Affirmed in 1978.

In spite of his owner calling the the winner of the Belmont "cheaters" because they did not run in the Kentucky Derby and The Preakness, California Chrome won the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year.  After The Belmont loss and as an also ran in the Pennsylvania Derby, Chrome finished a decent 3rd after another troublesome start to Bayern.

I think the owners of California Chrome spoke their mind at the wrong time.  The story of a less than regally bred horse almost winning the Triple Crown is good enough reality TV and sports event. The owners, connections, and the horse had a great run and the horse has won The Hollywood Derby on the Turf on November 29, 2014.  Losing isn't fun, feeling like you got screwed in the process can make it really painful, but life goes on.

Sunday, at Hialeah Park, the $417,000 Hialeah Park Derby was run.  The winner was Seize the Win, ridden by Shanley Jackson, trained by Matt Frazier and owned by Glen Graff.  The win was worth $175,000 for the connections.  Shanley got out of the gate first and never looked back.  The winner paid $26.80 to win.  On the backside, Matt was happy, Shanley was happy, and the win would begin the healing process for Matt who lost stable star Joltin Jess after an injury suffered in a race at Prairie Meadows in Iowa.

Shanley always rode horses but became a professional jockey at age 46 in 2009, after driving a school bus and operating heavy equipment.  I walked with him back to the jocks room after the last race.  He said it was his biggest win ever and he was happy the horse ran so well and there were no problems.

Monday morning, Shanley was out galloping horses as the sun rose and Matt asked me if I got a bet down on his horse Sunday.  Sheepishly, all I could say was I used him in my superfectas.  And that's the way it goes
