What Have I Done
Summer in Miami requires figuring out a way to escape the heat. Since my retirement I've been reading more and the latest book was about letters between John and Abigail Adams. I'm working on Stieg Larson trilogy and spend the better part of Saturday afternoon at the Flagler Dog Track that has been renamed the Magic City Casino.
This seems reasonable as I do some volunteer work and work two half days a week for the Miami Herald and don't have any self destructive habits to fill in the rest of the schedule.
At least that was what I thought until last week. I've upgraded my cable and get a lot more channels.
Nerdishly I used to watch CSPAN, MSNBC, and the occasional USA marathon. Now with more channels I've learned the equivalent of speed dial on the remote and have access to TVG which shows live horse races accross the nation. In my opinion Hialeah Park compares favorably with Saratoga as a venue. Ojala that they could run the throughbreds that run at the Spa.
Now instead of infomercials I'm having to chose between catching up with movies and clicking on the last channel button to seem if it's postime for the 5th race at Penn National or what's the quarterhorse action from the west coast on the weekend.
My only suggestion is to hit the mute button so that you don't have to listen to the commentators between races pumping their $24-$50 pick 4's selections. These guys are just as clueless as the rest of us and should be muzzled.
I'll know I've lost my mind if I set up a betting account online. This will be a test of some of my more dearly held libertarian principles.
