It's All About the U
The situation in the UM Athletic Department is troubling but not entirely unexpected. The "booster" in question is a bad person and has ripped off a lot of people including the UM. There were players that accepted things that were against the rules. The development people did not do an adequate background check of this person. Athletic directors that served the university for the last 20 years were complicit in many of the problems that problems that keep popping up in college football and particularly at the UM.
Sam Jankovich, Paul Dee, Kirby Holcott and the current AD have failed miserably based on the current reports. There is even talk among the chattering on the radio stations that the president of the university should resign if the allegations prove true.
Paul Dee and his relationship the NCAA enforcement committee while this was occuring at the UM is extremely troubling. Calling out other schools while your own institution has major league problems ranks as a major conflict of interest or stupid or both or maybe worse.
The damage has already been done. A new AD, basketball coach, and football coach will all suffer as the result of this and so will my alma mater. Sadly I think the lesson learned will again be don't get caught rather than a review of the proper place of sports in college life.
I can't really blame the student athletes when they see how much money is spread out among coaches, administrators, and the institution and now the response from many is that the players need to be put on shorter leash where all their moves will be monitored. There is something wrong with this picture and sentencing the UM to a death penalty for these actions does not get to the root of the problem that college football presents.
