The Mean Season
A rainy weekend in the Keys is a tropical depression. Florida has not had a hurricane landfall in about five years but it looks like we have a visit from Irene later this week. This is my reading of the information on TV. Let's hope the mountains of Hispanola are able to weaken the storm enough so the weather is not too catastrophic.
I lived through Andrew and that once in a lifetime storm was enough for me. The storm was bad and in many ways the aftermath was even worse. Losing electricity when it is hot is uncomfortable at best.
If you have storm damage working with insurance companies will be as difficult as finding work before the storm. If we could only have a selective disaster, one that left people alone but took out some of the vacant properties that the banks can't sell, might mean the end of problems in the housing market in South Florida. But I should be careful what I ask for. The power of a direct hit from even a minor hurricane will be inconvinient.
One of my goals may be to document the contents of my house. A person much wiser than I once said two moves are as good as a fire for cleaning out your house. The Florida corrallary might be two moves are as good as a hurricane for cleaning out your house.
