The Flamingo Six, The chase Is over, the thrill isn't gone, but isn't quite the same

Lately, I have been quite interested in winning a particular bet at the race track in Hialeah. Yesterday, somebody won about $142,000 by being the only person  with a ticket that picked the all the winners in the last six races at Hialeah Park. All the numbers were covered in the last race. There would be a winner.

The bet is sort of like a lottery bet because of the really large number of possible combinations that could win but giving the illusion if you were skillful and a little bit lucky, a 20 cent wager might be able to payoff big time.

Each day the pool grew larger.  If there wasn't a single winner with six winners, 40% of the pool of wagers is paid out to all the winning tickets with six winners.  If nobody picks six, you are paid for picking five winners. The rest of the money is carried over to the next day.  Very lottery like.  As the pool grows more and more people play more money, more people pick six winners.  It can get expensive to cover all the likely suspects in six races and then hope that you picked a couple of long shots that might give you the only perfect ticket.

Saturday, $22,143 was bet in the Flamingo Six Pool.  110,715 combinations were picked, and counting the carryover from money bet since day one of the meet, $142,000 was on the line.

I'm glad somebody finally hit it and won the whole thing.  Folks I see at the track on a daily basis would ask if I wanted to get into a group that would pool their money and really try to win the whole damn thing.  $5.00 here and $10 there, and $5.00 here and $10.00 there can get to be a lot of money.  Three weeks ago, I know a group that picked 6 winners and won about $700.  The winnings from that ticket were reinvested in more chasing, more than a few beers, and a trip to the grocery store.

You can beat a race but it is almost impossible to beat the races.

Today the chase begins anew.  I think that there is a guarantee of minimum $1000 if you are the only one that can pick the winners in the last six races on today's card.

I may just have outlined a fool's errand.
