Reasons To Retire

Robert Bates, the reserve police office in Oklahoma, who shot and killed an unarmed man was given approval to go on a vacation to the Bahamas.  He will go to trial and what will happen then is in the unknown category. I'll bet he wishes he had been on vacation on April 2, 2015.

After a certain age the rule: "do no harm" should be enforced more rigorously.  Exams for driver's licenses should be given more often, college football coaches should be reassigned, and in this case reserve police officers should be given a desk job.

The TV news these days has an all too frequent story about cars that smash into convenience stores, dry cleaners, and coffee shops. Surveillance cameras record the event and too often it is a driver in their 80's that had a medical situation or they hit the wrong pedal. Joe Paterno's record was tarnished by bad judgement in the Sandusky matter and an unarmed man was killed by accident by Mr. Bates.

Seniors need stuff to keep themselves active and engaged but they also need to understand they are no longer in their 40's, 50's, or 60's. Independence makes sense but sometimes folks need a little bit of monitoring as well.
