Sun Up Monday Morning

The Derby is over and I'm on to the Preakness in two weeks.  A future book bet on California Chrome was a good bet after all. The horse is the real deal, but a lot of things can happen in two weeks.  There is a lot of talk about a Triple Crown winner as there always is after the Kentucky Derby.  Sir Barton was the very first Triple Crown Winner, sort of anyway.  They didn't really use the term until 1930 when Gallant Fox was the second horse to win the Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes.  The Cubs haven't won the World Series since 1908. It's only been 36 years since Affirmed was the last Triple Crown winner.  Horseman could learn patience from Cubs fans.

Randy Weidner, trainer of the Beaver, had a good weekend also.  He won the South Dakota Futurity and the South Florida Derby for quarter horses at Fort Pierre, South Dakota.  The owner, breeds quarter horses and I guess this makes him the go to guy if you want a South Dakota Bred.

Derby Winner Sammi Santanna 3yo is the big brother to Misty River Dancer 2yo Futurity Winner and I hope they stay healthy. Same father and mother genetically, but the embryo was probably implanted in a third mare. So much for horse breeding these days.

Today is Cinco De Mayo.  There are reports that there is a shortage of limes. Quite possibly true, because I haven't seen them on sale at the grocery store in a while and South Florida grows a lot of limes.  Saturday, somebody asked me what the difference between a Mojito and a Mint Julep, I confidently said a Mojito uses rum while a Mint Julep uses bourbon and I don't think they mash up the mint. Margaritas and shots of tequila $3.00 all day at the Hialeah Park Casino and it's Mexican Monday at the Moose Lodge.

I watched the Cubs game on ESPN last night.  The poor folks in the crowd looked pretty cold and the way they were bundled up it could have been a fall football game and the outcome was a pretty good reason to stay home.  I'm not a big fan of these throw back uniforms either, but in Miami I appreciate it when they close the roof and turn on the AC, its like being at home although sometimes the crowds are a little bigger.
