I Guess I'm into Populism
In the USA there have been a number of foreys into populism where politicians promise the moon rhetorically but in practice deliver quite a bit less. Some folks might think of this as failed populism, I'm not exactly sure about definitions because they are subject to manipulation but the government has had some significant failures which may or may not be included in populism, although the failure is almost always blamed on the public for being stupid, lazy, or cheaters asking for a free lunch at someone elses expense.
Dylan Thomas is quoted as saying an alcoholic is someone who you dislike, that drinks as much as you do. There is a lot of truth in that comment, an awful lot of truth, and it may describe where we are at these days. It's easier to attack people and ideologies than govern.
A cartoonist can characterize Social Security Benefits as a ponzi scheme a la Bernie Madoff, educational policies as a failure, and immigration policies, as out of control
I would ask for good workable program alternatives when it becomes clear there are issues with the policies we have established.
Life expectancy increases, tax rates to support social security benefits are seemingly unchangeable, and actuarially we are getting older as a country.
Most educational policies in this country are established by local school boards and funded by state and local taxes. The problems in education need to be addressed at a local level, but the buck seems to have been passed to elected officials not related to where the problem is located.
Immigration policies cite 10 million undocumented folks in this country. The population of the United States is over 300 million people. Not all these 10 million undocumented folks are criminal and the system as currently set up isn't fair and we are missing opportunities to bring good people to this country and grow in needed ways.
Let's get to work!
