Gulfstream Park's Carryover Will Hopefully Carryover to Monday

Horse racing in Florida will be changing soon and hopefully for the better.  Gulfstream Park and Calder Race Course have come to an agreement where the two tracks will no longer run head to head against each other.  Calder Race Course will run in the fall, and Gulfstream Park will pick other days the rest of the year.  Calder will have enough days to continue operating its slot machines, Gulfstream will pay Calder for it's reduced schedule of races and signature races and to keep its barns and training facilities open for horsemen.

Long term this is big news for Florida Racing. But I'm absolutely positive that all the wouldas, couldas, and shouldas that follow the ponies, will be watching to see what the carryover pool will be for the mandatory payout of Gulfstream's Rainbow Pick Six on Monday. A single winning $.20 ticket could be worth as much as $16 million.  The facts point to multiple winning tickets being sold and the winners splitting as much as $16 million.

As a horse player, this is interesting, as a curious person I've done some research, and as a gambler I'm trying to figure out if I should take a shot at what could be the biggest pick six pool in history.

The pool started growing last year. Eventually the pool got really big and syndicates would play thousands of dollars to win 60% of the pools and cover their bets if they did not have the only winning ticket and win el gordo.  Lately, I was told the syndicates have raised their bets and are almost guaranteeing multiple winning tickets until the whole thing is forced out on Monday.

I've bought an early edition of the racing form and races from 5-10 feature 10 horse fields and competitive races. It has been a hot topic of buddies between races.

Back in the days before simulcasting of races across the country, groups would get together and you knew your partners, and you probably knew groups of other partners, and you could make your bet and add your opinion to that of other players and then pray you would be a small part of a big winning ticket. The idea is the same but there is so much money involved that even great handicappers can be crushed by big money players that may spend money covering the entire field in races that may be difficult to handicap.

Amazingly I've actually cashed a Pick 6 ticket at Hialeah Park.  The problem is so did a few other folks and the pool was tiny and as you can imagine 60% of a small pool, while a handicapping victory, was not a financial success, and in hindsight really dumb.

And so it goes, post time for the 5th race is about twenty one hours away.
