What's Good for GM

Last Thursday was my last day working for the Miami Herald.  Shortly before the end of my route it became difficult to walk.  This is something that happens after the race and not during the race.  The money wasn't that important, the routine, the connection, the exercise and more than a few intangibles were more important.  Counting the product, counting steps, dodging the rain and heat in the summer, enjoying the walk in pretty neighborhoods when the weather was cool, and listening to the radio as I stumbled my way around 600 +/- houses was the deal.  The work did not require a great deal of education.  When I turned in the GPS they used to track their workforce, my Herald contact thanked me.

My first job in Florida was with the Miami Herald.  The hiring process taught me something.  I did not get interviewed or hired the first time I applied to work there.  I kept seeing the same ad in the classified section looking for copy clerks and wondered what the deal was.  Even Sears wouldn't hire me for a new store they were opening.  Following up with Sears, they were unsure if I would like the commute from Coral Gables to Hialeah.

I needed a job. I got dressed up a little and went to the Herald and went back and asked to see the guy in charge of hiring.  Amazingly I got to see him without an appointment and told the guy up front that I met the education and experience required for the job they kept advertising.  I told him I was a college kid who needed a part time job while going to school and being new to Miami needed needed to know what I was missing in the process.  He asked for my "Florida" driver's license and before I knew it I had three interviews in different departments.  The folks at the Herald also engineered my promotion to being the advertising manager for the college paper and they have always been a good employer, even in a changing market.

In Key West there is a t-shirt with a series of palm trees, below the palm trees, it says "They come and they go".  If you are going to work in Florida get a Florida Driver's License before you start applying for jobs.
