Rave Party for 70,000?

So you rent the Bayfront Park in Miami for the weekend.
Put up gigantic speakers and hire the biggest celebrity  DJs in the world.
Call it The Ultra Music Festival and you can sell weekend passes for $399.

I doubt the city fathers when they approved this event really appreciated what they were getting into.

The hotels, restaurants and all the rest of hospitality industry saw dollar signs.  Upwards of 160,000 visitors were expected.  Does the term "Woodstock" mean anything to you all?

Yes, Biscayne Boulevard's traffic was screwed up for the weekend, there were lots of gate crashers and a security guard was trampled and in the hospital with a severe brain hemorrhage, and there certainly was drug usage.

Unfortunately this wasn't three days of "Peace and Music".  The fences didn't work very well at Woodstock either.  Pictures from a helicopter of the scene were kind of scary as lots folks jumped over the fence at one point.  According to reports the promoters were warned that some fences were inadequate by the Miami Police.  The festival has a 16 year history and perimeter security has always been an issue.  If I were a parent of a kid going to this kind of event, I think I'd be really worried.

The City of Miami has made a lot of money hosting this event in the past.  The Mayor of Miami now calls it a quality of life issue.  Big events like this are always a quality of life issue and folks that live in the neighborhoods affected by the events always take it in the neck, be it sporting events, concerts, art festivals, or boat shows or cultural events.

If you don't like these events, you usually avoid them if at all possible and realize it comes with living in a tourist based economy

This party may have outgrown the venue, but in some ways this is just another version of what to do with the rowdy kids that show up every spring break.

NEWSFLASH

The Ultra Music Festival isn't going away quietly.  It's being reported that retiring Miami Beach Police Chief will be hired to become the festivals new director of security.  Buena Suerte!
