Headlines That Made Me Smile

 The Pope gives two week notice.

I think this process is better than having somebody calling his name while tapping his head with a silver hammer and then declaring him dead, as is the ritual

We are told that this was a historic event.  The Pope's may come and go but they almost never resign and we are in uncharted territory according to those with a better perspective than mine.  An ex-president is a member of an exclusive club, but an ex-Pope is unique as things go in the Catholic Church.

Just about everywhere in life an 85 year old is winding down.  I think this is a wise decision even if it may be a little awkward for his successor.  Ask Joe Paterno, he probably wished he would have retired, rather than getting fired.

We're #3.

The University of Miami has reached #3 in the AP poll behind Indiana and Duke.  This is another historic week.  Whether UM will finish the season ranked #3 is an open question.  The ACC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament still need to be played.  Looking over the top 25 teams, there are lots of teams that could be #1 after March Madness is over.

    I think that is a problem. Byrd from WV was someone who was venerated in WV but he really should have moved on a decade earlier. Maybe that would work for some Supreme Court Justices also.

Internet Dust Ups

 A high school classmate shared on FB, something from a 64 year old commercial pilot who had passed a exam to fly on of the latest jets in their fleet of aircraft.  I was also aware of an FAA rule about retirement at age 65 for commercial pilots.    In the U.S.,  there are no  FAA  age limits for pilots except for commercial airline pilots employed by airlines certificated under 14 CFR Part 121 . These airlines cannot employ pilots after they reach the age of 65. However, these pilots may stay on with a Part 121 carrier in some other role, such as flight engineers. What Is Official These Days?

 I would guess most people would understand what Official means.  Just because a person holds a public office doesn't mean everything he might do is official and everything he might not do is official as well. “The modern conservative is engaged in one of man’s oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness". from J. Kenneth Galbraith interview. And oh, by the way, moral justification at times isn't much more than a fig leaf, you can bet someone got screwed or got the proverbial get out of jail free card.
