Way to Go Ozzie!
Only in Miami would a manager's comment about Fidel Castro make front page news. Ozzie said "I respect Fidel Castro. You know why? Many people have tried to kill Fidel Castro in the last 60 years and yet the SOB is still there." In most circles down here Bin Laden, Castro and Sadam would get a response like two out of three ain't bad, but why is it taking so long to get Fidel. I also think the Venezuelan connection with Hugo Chavez doesn't help either. The comment is tone deaf at best and insulting to many that live in Miami
The Marlin's had their home opener and then ran off to the Queen City to play Cincinnati. 0-2 is not the best way to start out the season. Hitting was lacking in both games. Saturday was better but there is a long way to go.
The Cubs on the other hand? They have lost another couple of games. As of Saturday they were 0-2 also. I know the road is a tough place but as Steve Stone is quoted: at the end of the day, boys, don't tell me how rough the water is, you bring in the ship. Another Cub fan seems to be taking it in stride, he's already promoting prospects in Des Moines.
The Marlin manager says he's sorry for what he said about Fidel. Let's hope so. Zambrano is pitching tonight and that should be enough to keep Ozzie's attention.
Monday Afternoon: Dan Lebatard of the Miami Herald, ESPN, and the Marlin's flagship stations says he heard that there are people in the Cuban community calling for Ozzie to be fired and has filled a great deal of air time about the controversy. I would hope that should be fired: it would be based on how the Marlins do on the field and not based on his political feelings or as the result of boycott based on a stupid statement for which he has said he was sorry.
Tuesday Afternoon: Ozzie was suspended for five games for making an inadvertant or moronic mistake. Lost in translation I guess. Miami is not Chicago and the management needs to take some of the blame for hiring a loose cannon. What did they expect?
