And Now for Something Completely Different
Living far away from my hometown of Bensenville, Illinois, the high school reunions I attended were Labor Day long weekend events full of visiting with classmates, tours of FHS and visiting with family that still lived in the area. I think I got honorable mention for coming all the way from Miami, Florida to the event
There is a ritual aspect for reunions and family gatherings of all shapes and sizes. Birthdays, Weddings, Funerals, and holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving have aspects of a family ritual.
Getting a driver's license, moving out of the house, graduating from high school or college are certainly milestones.
John Cusack holds a Boom Box over his head to woo Ione Skye. The song "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel reached #1 in the United States in 1986 was an iconic part of the movie "Say Anything" which was released in April 1989 just prior to my high school's 20th Reunion. Yes, I would say it was a driver for my second high school reunion and just shy of 40 I had a great job, some money, and could say I finished the Orange Bowl Marathon. (I still have that powder blue t-shirt).
Milestones and rituals have some power over all of us. They are grounded in rational thought, emotion, and desire and are part of being human.
Sunday is Father's Day. I will be celebrating a couple of birthdays that occurred on 6/16 and reflect on Father's Day a little differently this year as it is a 20th anniversary informally. It's a little complicated, simple, and this year it's going to be a good day to celebrate.
