I'm Relieved Governor Brewer Vetoed SB 1062

I'm curious as to what motivates the in Arizona to decide state policies in the way they do.  SB 1062 should never have been passed in the first place. If you want to be a private organization that only serves your members, accepts no tax breaks and exemptions, it is a free country but there are limits to even that kind of freedom and it generates blow back. The Klan may enjoy freedom of speech but an endorsement from them, is something to run away from The law as passed seemed unconstitutional on its face and flies against just about every civil rights act passed. Once you pass the threshold of putting yourself out in the public I don't think you can take all back. I think the use of religion to justify discrimination that would otherwise be illegal is wrong. In the public arena Arizona's ideas about immigration have caused folks to leave the state.  Allowing folks to discriminate based on sexual preference for religious reason would have given another group of folks...

The Run for the Roses 2021

I thought the September version of the Kentucky Derby was an afterthought for most folks.  Authentic (the horse) was trained by Bob Baffert and probably the most memorable part of the day was the Winner's Circle chaos that knocked the trainer to the ground for a moment. Authentic went on to win 5 of 7 races in 2020 and $7.2 million dollars.  Authentic finished 2nd in the Preakness and the Santa Anita Derby but finished the year strong winning the Breeder's Cup Classic. This year the field for the Derby is headed by Essential Quality.  Undefeated in five starts the grey by Tapit will be the favorite this year.

Another Battle

The big man does what he wants, the little man does what he can.  This is a Haitian proverb according to Ethan Casey.  In the context of the latest atrocity in Afghanistan where an American soldier killed 16 people in Afghanistan this is a moment to stand down.  Who are we? What are we doing there?  Legally, the insanity defense and apologies from the President are probably not going to matter in this case. Abusers forget, the abused don't. This doesn't mean defense argument and the apologies aren't real. It means that we are becoming the people we are fighting.  Going forward, this is where we need to realize the limits of our power and the implication of the use of power.
