900 Billion Dollars Is A Lot Of Money
Gamblers usually lose their bankroll and have to go home, go to work and rebuild their bankrolls and the process starts once again. The casino, race track, card rooms or state run lotteries can bust out a person and cause problems related to families, marriages and health.
This COVID 19 Pandemic has made an awful lot of people gamblers and they never went crazy and got the easy money fever that a lot of real gamblers suffer from. Jobs gone, whole industries in shambles and public health warnings that have placed millions out of work through no fault of their own.
This money which should be targeted to those most in need of cash because they will spend the money and it will circulate through the economy as rent or mortgage payments, food purchases, holiday gifts, utility bills, health care, car payments, gasoline, take out meals, insurance bills and cable bills. Some of it will be pissed away but getting it spent now and sooner rather than later will keep more people "in the game " while we wait for the vaccine to get widely distributed.
Some folks will be concerned about how this money will be repaid. Nobody likes to pay taxes and it is a slam dunk to point out various inequities related to public finances, boondoggles, waste and for some out right criminal fraud.
This is why there are elections and this is why we need serious legislation and serious representatives that will make serious decisions that go beyond no new taxes and a more progressive view of public finances where we don't have to rely on charitable donations of multi-billionaires to do things that need to be done. Too often the accumulation of wealth has been left unchecked and subsidized for no good reason except for the uber wealthy to play games avoiding taxes, buying political influence, corporate jets and bodyguards.
But it may not be enough.
