Simple Isn't Really Simple
Once again the issue of immigration is on the front burner. There are a variety of immigration programs on the books and there are a variety of terms that have been used to describe them. The laws affect folks of various backgrounds differently. Naturalized citizens, lawful permanent residents, visa recipients based exceptional employment skills or visa recipients that will work in fields for which there are insufficient qualified workers all play a part in our immigration system. Immediate family members of Naturalized Citizens and lawful permanent residents are also allowed to apply for visas to come to the United States.
There are a bunch of other classifications for entrance into this country related to political asylum, refugees, natural disasters, human trafficking, crime victims and domestic violence and other humanitarian reasons.
Who doesn't want to reunite families, attract good workers, fill holes in the labor market, educate students from around the world and play our part in helping displaced folks because of wars or disasters.
The population is getting older and families are smaller in general. The country may be able to mechanize itself but paying for stuff we need and use along with being competitive and vibrant will require its population to grow smartly. Too many restrictions will discourage the people we need from coming here and the progress we all want may be slower than we want as well.
Who, why, how many, and how fast are issues that need to be worked on. Quantifying this isn't a threat to this country as some may think. It's something we need to review regularly and enforce fairly or those that live here and those who want to come here.
