A Safe Conversation At A Bar

Sometimes discussing politics is a losing proposition.  It can just be uncomfortable, hardly ever changes anybodies mind, the undercurrents of most political conversations these days are places you don't really want to go.

A few days ago a couple of displaced Chicagoans discussed Vienna Beef Hot Dogs, fluorescent green relish, poppy seed rolls at a bar.  From there it went to the best place for Italian Beefs, Italian Sausage, and combos.  A guy across the bar said he didn't like deep dish Chicago pizza.  And so it went.  Food is a safe topic, sort of like how do you like your eggs?

Older geezer types then started discussing sports.  Lately even the Superbowl has been touched by politics, or cheating, or health related issues so about the only safe subject is what are your numbers in the squares game that is played just about everywhere.

The Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in 1961 and Joe mentioned Glenn Hall, the goalie.  I've been to Blackhawk games and was all of ten years old when the Hawks won the Cup that year.  I couldn't skate well but I think I remembered the names and jersey numbers of most of the players.

Pitchers and catchers report for Spring Training in about a week.  I'm pretty sure moaning about the Marlins will be a safe topic but it won't sell many beers.
