Hurricane Irma Plus Nine
Hurricane Irma will be long remembered. A glancing blow that might have been much worse. Downed trees, an extended power outage, a failed generator, traffic disruptions, worries about friends and relatives on Florida's West Coast, and a lot of other little things. Sleeping was difficult without AC, fans, or lights to guide one to the bathroom for a midnight cold shower.
I actually watched the hurricane blow through High Pines through hurricane resistant windows. The power of nature to "trim trees" is awesome but it is also a little bit random.
Last night the bitching about power restoration reached a fever pitch as the Coral Gables City Attorney threatened to sue Florida Power and Light because they did not restore power to everyone in the City Beautiful by 11:59 PM, Sunday Night as initially promised. FPL countered the claim by saying Coral Gables didn't do their job by trimming trees to minimize line damage. Each storm is different but it seems FPL over promised and under performed and the City Beautiful should have been more diligent in trimming trees that could take out power for the rich and powerful that call Coral Gables home. High Pines finally power last night, later than hoped for but finally done.
Traffic patterns from downed signals and blocked roads disrupted traffic but I had little reason to do much driving and with lights out, and driving through dark neighborhoods after sundown.
Little sister called to report a 4000 pound palm tree had landed on garage roof, but the beer fridge had survived and her power was only off for about six hours. I hope the insurance clams go as smoothly.
Lastly, with power out, phones stop working, cell towers go dark, and it takes power to get those phone and laptop batteries charged. This is an interesting problem and something that I'm sure needs some work going forward.
Hurricane season still has about two months left and it looks like Maria is going to slam Puerto Rico, and the Florida Keys make Coral Gables look like child's play.
