Jai Alai In Florida City- A New Venue For Gambling
It is a long way from South Miami to the King Court Key Poker Room and Jai Alai Fronton in Florida City. There are other places to play cards and hit the slots closer to home. But if you live way south and are tired of driving in big city traffic this might become a home closer to home.
The place is definitely a work in progress as I visited only the Fronton where the first game kicked off at noon on Friday. Mutual Clerks were being trained and finding the place to take a pee was more like going to a golf tournament with fancy port a johns. You had to go outside. The facilities also included showers for the players. A very nice touch, I wonder how long it will take residents of the RV Park to sneak in for a shower.
Folks from Hialeah Park were there to see the first games and obviously see what needed to be worked on. The players were from Dania Jai Alai and it looked from this not very trained observer that the new court and ball being used would have an impact on the game. The court seemed much smaller than Miami Jai Alai annd it looks like the ceiling is out of bounds. I'm not sore if the place is big enough for a doubles game
Most folks were just curious, they didn't gamble. There were win pools where there was only $1 or $2 bet. Sitting on metal bleachers very close to the action was interesting and I imagine that folks will get to "know" these players and their girl friends if they spend any time at the fronton. I made a $2 bet on the #7 in the 4th game. #7 did not win but my bet was the only one in the win pool and I guess I am entitled to a refund.
I suspect that the card room will be much busier. There is a food truck and you can buy beer. The air conditioning worked. I might suggest to the management that they rent cushions for the bleechers. Eventually you will have simulcasting of the dogs, horses, an jai alai. During the season I can imagine that folks from the RV park might enjoy the place and signs will point folks who need some time off from the keys might stop on their way to Walmart or shopping in the big city. I'm pretty sure Florida City will need to hire a new police officer or two to watch over the new business in town.
