It's Alright Ma, I'm Only ...
Out of habit (mostly) I go to the Flagler Dog Track on Thursday Evenings when there is "live" greyhound races. This is one connection I have with the outside world that is real. It isn't digital, it isn't fantasy. On Thursday Evenings I sit and eat dinner with with a small and shrinking group of folks that bet on dog races. The track has a free contest for those that buy a dinner or a sandwich.
The sport isn't popular with animal rights folks. I understand their concerns but that discussion always kind of deteriorates.
The glamour of dog racing left the building a long time ago. The folks that show up on Thursdays are almost always the same folks. It's not like they take attendance but you must buy dinner by 7:15 pm to get an entry into the contest. Last night Tony and his significant other(regulars) made it to their table just before the deadline. They had missed the races the week before and got special greetings from just about everyone. This may seem like a bit of cultish behavior. Could be.
I'm pretty sure even the track ownership will stop greyhound racing as soon as the state law that couples slot machines and card rooms with parimutual gambling is "decoupled".
Greyhounds like to run if there is something to chase and in many ways they are athletes like football players or participants in other sports.
Another thing the track owners and sport franchise owners don't like is taking care of their athletes when they slow down, old or get hurt on the job.
There is a connection between what happens in the sports world and the current debate in health care and insurance. Don't get hurt, old, or too slow to pay your way.
