Casablanca Once Again

If you haven't watched old movies for a while maybe you should start by watching Casablanca.  Its a lot more than just a love triangle.

Neutrality was not a very good strategy to fight the Nazis back then.  I doubt that ham handed executive orders will  work as good immigration policy either.  Occupied France wasn't very French and the United States would be ill advised to retreat to more isolationist policies.

Casablanca was a city back then full of people who can't get where they want to go and for many it was a place where they must live as exiles or refugees.  Travel visas were hard to get, they often included murder, bribery, or money/luck.  Why are folks with valid visas being stopped.  This seems very arbitrary and illegal.

Getting to America was a dream for many.  America was a safe harbor and a place to regroup and continue the fight.  I believe the United States must continue to be a place where people can come and live and enjoy freedom.

It seems to me that International Airports in the United States are not the ideal place to settle immigration issues.  The "vetting" of travelers to the United States should happen before they are able to enter to the United States by airplane, ship, or on foot.

The demonstrations at the nations airport indicate to me and many others that while the election may be over the policy questions still exist and they deserve a serious review, not partisan steamrollers.

The Executive Branch has been under fire for the way the policy was "rolled out".  The Courts will decide the fate of the the executive order.

The conference call was interesting, and I was struck by the fact once again how much discretion the government has on these cases.  I know of folks that were not allowed to visit dying parents because of questions regarding their immigration status.  You could go but there was no guarantee that you would be able to return.

I was also struck by the President's calling out the judge(s) that issued a stay of his order.

This could be the beginning of a court battle that could be longer than the 90 day travel ban planned.
