Globalism and A Perversion
Ted Arison, the father of the owner of the Miami Heat and Carnival Cruise Line died a citizen of Israel after being born in Palestine, moving to the United States, becoming a U.S. citizen and making his fortune in two cruise lines, Norweigiean and Carnival Cruise Lines and then renouncing his citizenship to avoid estate taxes. His daughter is the richest person in Israel and his son Mickey is the 73rd richest person in the U.S. and is a major owner in Carnival Cruise Line and and the Miami Heat.
I'm in favor of creating jobs and the cruise industry is huge in Miami. It is an affordable vacation option for a lot of Americans. When things go well it can be a great experience. If there are problems a refund of your ticket and a big discount on a future cruise may or may not make up for your discomfort.
People have jobs in Miami selling cruises, taxis have passengers, hotels sell rooms while passengers wait for their cruises to start, and restaurants have customers eating and drinking. Yes, there is a multiplier effect because of economic activity and cruises are valuable not only to Miami, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean nations and the staff the work on the ships and send home money to their families back home.
The situation is even more confusing. The law of the seas is really different from the laws in the United States. Even though you may cruise from Miami and be an American it all depends where the ship is registered. The law the applies seems to insulate cruise companies from responsibilities for just about everything. If they screw up it is on you, if you screw up and they help you in the process, it may only be slightly better than driving drunk.
I would like to thank Caitlin Burke for writing about legal issues on cruise ships. Personally, I served on a mock jury that was trying to decide how much a cruise ship company might expect to pay for a passenger that got hammered and dove into a pool and ended up a quadriplegic. The passengers and the crew can get screwed when the number comes up double 00.
And the Arison family avoids legal responsibility, taxes, and avoids minimum wage, overtime, and other labor laws. This is how the rich get rich, stay rich, and pretty much pee on just about everyone else in the process.
The Miami Heat said they would be paying Miami Dade County a portion of their revenue to pay for the arena they pay if the profit exceeded $14,000,000. The accountants say they doubt the county will ever see a dime from that agreement. The team is run like a non profit organization, which even gives non profits a bad name.
The last two Heat NBA Championships have been priceless I guess and Ted Arison is one cheap and dead bastard.
