Some Boycotts Are Really Stupid

It has been said that 1972 Miami Dolphins are a bunch of bitter old farts.  It's been reported they drink a toast every year honoring the team that beats the last undefeated team during the NFL football season.  Each year their record as the only team with a perfect season gets a year older.

I remember that championship season, I lived in Miami and it introduced me to a uniquely Miami celebration technique.  Folks stood on corners and banged on pots and pans.  This was inspired in comparison to Morgantown, West Virginia where they burned old furniture.

President Obama invited the team to the White House to celebrate the perfect season and probably as a shout out to the National Football League.

Not very strangely these days several members of the team decided to boycott the event.  Jim Langer, Bob Kuechenberg, and Manny Fernandez have opted out for political reasons.  These guys have all benefited from their careers in pro football and they have the absolute right to not attend.

I can personally think of a few reasons these former players should have bit their lips and attended.

As a Miami Dolphin fan, it seems rather childish to not attend an event that was obviously important to the franchise, Don Shula, the owner of the team, and the surviving members of the team that attended.  Do they really think many will long remember anything except that they were no shows on what might be one of the last times they might get together at a venue other than a Shula's Restaurant.

The Orange Bowl is gone and at least Obama remembered.  I doubt he will ask for a campaign contribution.  I can't think of a major political advantage to his inviting the Dolphins to the White House.  Maybe he just respects the accomplishments of the 1972 Miami Dolphins.

And so it goes.
