Thanksgiving 2012
I survived yesterday. Food was really good. A bottle of red wine helped the process along. We were three and a small turkey breast, sweet potatoes and a Dominican potato salad were enough for yesterday and there is plenty left for sandwiches today. I said thanks for all my gifts yesterday but probably don't say it often enough. I work enough, have plenty to eat, a roof over my head and can pay all my bills. I wish I would sleep a little better but that is a tiny issue in the scope of things.
Rather than football on TV or going to the mall to shop, I watched people in California and across the country chase a pick six carryover at Hollywood Park on TVG. I was a tiny part of action on a pool that totaled over 3.2 million dollars. I had four winners out of six races and had the satisfaction of breaking even for the day on my gambling. Most gamblers would call that a reasonably good day.
I've written about this many times. Horse racing is not the dynamic spectator sport it once was and except for the Triple Crown and the Breeders Cup there is very little coverage of the sport. I must admit a fascination with the way horses run and appreciate the athletes they are. Most people that care for horses could make more money in other jobs but there is something special in the morning on the backstretch unlike almost any other sport.
There were only 3300 souls at the track and the on track handle was less than $900,000, but if you added all the other places where you could make a bet the handle was over $8,000,000. Not a bad Thanksgiving for the track owners and they were nice enough to get you home in time to eat turkey without causing a lot of domestic distress. The Pick-6 paid about $6,300.
