Exit Stage Right
This is something I have been thinking about a lot. Sometimes people need to be fired even though they work hard, you mostly agree with them, but they just don't quite get the job done. Much has been said about leadership these days. As an academic exercise the arguments always make sense. You have to fire the manager because you can't fire all the players. The sports analogy applies but the consequences are not pretty.
The facts are that leadership is a fleeting thing and sometimes what is leadership to one person also motivates an opposite reaction. Not all followers are on the same page even though they need leadership these days possibly more than ever. Children need functional parents to succeed. Businesses need leadership to make produce something and make a profit. Why should it be different with government? The policies of government are not always as negative as those who decry taxes would make them out to be. These days it just seems to be stick it to the other guy, in the name of something that has nothing to do good policy making but is good theatre for an audience that seemed hooked on something that borders on the absurd if not pornographic.
The questions change as answers are proposed. If those in power were really interested in providing jobs to everyone that wanted to work I would think that something might be done and if it didn't work something else would be done, and maybe even a third or fourth option might be tried.
Instead we get discussions about social issues that are attached as poison pills and s a result there is very little legislating or oversight done as it is easier to change the subject than do the hard work of compromise and building consensus and then selling it.
And the result is the failure of government to do what it does and should do becomes a self fulfilling prophesy. Even successful programs are lynched instead of being adjusted to reflect new realities of living longer, higher standards, global competition.
The shadow government of lobbyists continue to promote government by the richer, for the richer, as we continue to marginalize the unemployed, working poor, and in spite of promoting democratic ideals do our best to suppress voter turnout by making it harder to vote in the name of preventing fraud that does not exist at the levels that would justify such actions but to exploit a political advantage.
The current elected leadership should be retired if they don't go voluntarily. This is one time that institutional memory needs a reset because what is happening now doesn't work in spite of protests from those that benefit whose only goal is to stay in office and collect from the rich and powerful do so by vilifying those with other ideas.
The Democratic and Republican Leadership are both to blame.
Business leaders who are actively exploiting resources or making profits by moving jobs overseas can hardly be trusted to do things that will help the unemployed in the USA.
The journalistic and media institutions are so weakened and fragmented and conversely concentrated to survive that they are much better at flogging entertainment than reporting and educating the public as to what is going on.
The Supreme Court that elected George Bush may continue on its mission to destroy what ever respect it had as being an honest decider of the law of the land if its decisions continue to be identified on a solely partisan basis.
I'm beyond calling for a revolution, the situation now is revolting enough and those in favor of violence cannot be trusted either.
Firing the manager, replacing the coaches, and giving the players a chance with an opportunity to succeed would be appreciated.
The situation right now is like having a ballerina dancing with scuba diving weights strapped on her waist or expecting Einstein to do his best thinking with migraines 24/7.
