Benefits and the Undocumented

Well at least the new immigration regulations didn't say anything about public education.

The idea of restricting permanent residence to those able to stand on their own two feet and not become a public charge has a certain appeal. Ironically, you already need a physical exam to get a green card.  I believe it is called an I-693.

Undocumented immigrants are generally not eligible to receive public benefits..

Generally no. Undocumented immigrants, including DACA holders, are ineligible to receive most federal public benefits, including means-tested benefits such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, sometimes referred to as food stamps), regular Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Undocumented immigrants are ineligible for health care subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and are prohibited from purchasing unsubsidized health coverage on ACA exchanges.

So I guess that the issue is really political in nature because it's a slippery slope to citizenship and voting.

A more candid approach would expand visas to those willing and able to work in the agricultural and hospitality industry and require the employers to pay prevailing wages and provide insurance.  This would probably also cause a shit storm as well.

  1. Eve if you come with a visa, there are not guarantees: "Applicants must demonstrate they are admissible into the U.S. by overcoming all grounds of inadmissibility including health-related grounds, criminality, security reasons, public charge, labor certification, illegal entrants and immigration violations, documentation requirements, and miscellaneous grounds," the agency said.
