Fidel Castro Has Died

Fidel Castro dead at 90
Late-breaking news of Fidel Castro's death arrived past the printing deadline. Please visit miamiherald.com for the latest news and special coverage.

The Saturday Morning paper had no mention of Fidel's death.  Raul Castro announced his older brother's death Friday night.  The party broke out after 1:00 AM in South Florida

Celebrations broke out at the Versasailles Restaurant on Calle Ocho and pots and pans were banged in Hialeah as if the Dolphins had won the Super Bowl.

I wonder how many editors will be back in their offices this morning scrambling.  The previous reports of Fidel's death have been greatly exaggerated, this time, it looks like he really bought the farm.

I anticipate no great return to Cuba but I think Havana will see a spike in tourists from Miami.  It may even be a good and cheap place to retire.

And this is the lead from El Herald: Fidel Castro prometió democracia, pero implantó una dictadura comunista que empobreció al país, aplastó los derechos humanos y colocó al mundo al borde de un holocausto nuclear.

Translation: Castro promised democracy, but implemented a communist dictatorship that impoverished the country, crushed human rights and took the world to the brink of nuclear holocaust.

The following is from the Sunday Washington Post:

Among the Cubans who want change to come faster, and who are tired of the political divisions and tensions that Castro represented, there was a hushed sense of relief Saturday at the news of his death.

“People here are so tired. He destroyed this place,” said a university engineering student who was walking home Saturday morning from the market in Havana’s central Vedado neighborhood. He began trembling when a reporter told him that Castro had died and that this time it wasn’t a mere rumor.

“I think you have to look at both the good and the bad, but there was more bad,” said the student, who declined to give his name, saying it would land him in trouble at school.
