Hialeah Park 2015-16
Saturday the barns at Hialeah Park are scheduled to open. Races will begin on December 26th and there is still a lot of work to be done before the first call to the post.
The QH folks will becoming from Iowa, Indiana, Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana for the most part.
I think a lot of trainers enjoy the good weather before they start training their two year olds seriously for the big races out west at Remington Park. Hopefully, it will dry out and get a little cooler.
Update 12/31/2015
It's now Thursday. The races have resumed. Morning workouts are happening. The jocks cafeteria is open for tacos, burritos and all sorts of Mexican morning food. Prices are up, but early this fall the cook bought a yearling at Heritage Place, somebody has to pay for that baby.
Opening day, Sunday, and Monday were filled with trial races for big races to be held in two weeks. The races were held but the biggest controversy was probably in the racing secretary's office. Arriving at the track Kasey Willis and his band of horses for the Hialeah Derby were all scratched from their trials. The trainer's license was not in order. And so it goes. The owners of the horses paid big money to enter the races and travel to Florida. The word on the backside is the trainer will be in court to blame the great state of florida for not completing the paperwork for a license in a timely manner. He may have a point but the Governor in the state probably doesn't care because they think everything can be done over the computer. I think the old adage, "The job isn't done until the paperwork is complete" applies. In this case as everyone received notices about the need for current licenses. Just because you bring a bunch of horses to Florida doesn't mean you should get a special pass because the office you called was closed when you called. Mr. Willis and his horses have left the grounds in protest I've been told. I will miss seeing his horses maybe.
RW Quarters qualified a horse for the Florida Stallion Stakes on Monday, for the finals on January 17th, 2016. Good luck! Randy.
On another front the 2nd floor has been remodeled, doors installed and air conditioning is in place. An old bar called the Brass Rail has been completely redone. There are televisions everywhere and there is serious desk space for those that feel the need to study past performances for races that are being run from Coast to Coast and South America.
I will be scrubbing buckets early Friday morning. Pictures to follow.
