Hialeah Park Closing Day

Spike the racehorse finished last in the AQHA Maiden Challenge Stake, Tuesday at Hialeah Park.  My only thought after the race was: When are we ever going to get a clean break?  The horse got back to the barn with no issues and will go back to being the eating machine she seemed to be this season.

The Tuesday Race Day was a make up day for the races that were cancelled on Saturday.  All said, I'm pretty sure changing the race day not had no impact on the results, but that is something to file away in the excuse drawer  We got thumped.

Live racing ends, the horses move on to Texas, Oklahoma, Indiana, New Mexico, Louisiana or back to the farm or ranch.  The schedule of races for the next year isn't set in stone at Hialeah but short of the usual weather concerns quarter horse racing will come back to South Florida when it gets cold up North.

A funny thing happened at the races on Monday, which was supposed to be closing day.

A former trainer comes into the Jockey Bar on Monday.  Check in hand, he mutters about the problems of a race track cashing one of its own checks.  The former trainer had a check for purse money he had won with a horse he owned a couple of weeks ago.  Even the casino wouldn't honor the check.  Former trainer announces he would really like to bet on his own horse.  Fiddling around on his cell phone, I guess he had an online account with some money in it.  One problem solved, problem #2, the tall former trainer in a big black cowboy hat says he needs a drink (a double vodka). A remember the guy wore the same hat when he had a good horse in a race when he trained horses. A double vodka before saddling the horse was also part of his pre-race ritual The book indicated his horse had a good shot at winning the race.  I gave the bar maid a $20 bill, I got $6.00 in change and he said bet the #10, put $2.00 across on the #10 in the next race.  Not blinking, I bet the $6.00 on the horse per his instructions, and went out to watch the race.

Rushing up on the outside #10, Shes Perfect Okey gets to the line in time and wins the race, paying $6.80, $3.80, and $2.80.  I almost got the cost of the drink back.  I went back to the bar to study the next race.

The tall former trainer walked in moments later, handed me a $20 bill and then bought me another beer.  The double sawbuck lasted the rest of the day.
