The News Today

Sometimes I wondered why they bothered publishing a newspaper on Tuesdays.  Some great metropolitan newspapers have scaled back and skip a day or double up on an edition to save a buck on production costs or just go internet.

Tuesday, February 4, 2014 in the Miami Herald there were at least two stories that caught my attention.

A kennel owner was charged with having forged documents related to vaccination records for greyhounds running in South Florida.  The vet whose signature was used died in 2010.  This story is a follow up to various drugs and syringes being found on the grounds of the kennels where the dogs live when they are not at the track racing.  There are legitimate drugs used theraputically for greyhounds. And the use of testosterone to keep female dogs from going in heat and allow them to keep running regularly is nothing new.  Barney O'Donnell is one of the largest kennel owners of racing greyhounds and his dogs have been banned from racing until the situation is cleared up.  The old guy (84) may lose his license in Florida and in other states.  The use of performance enhancing drugs is not new and in some ways it may not even be news.

In this particular case the dog tracks may actually be discrediting one of their own products which is not profitable to pour more money into promoting slot machines and poker parlors where the money is these days.  Such is life.  A bad drug test and the purse money gets redistributed, the trainer can be fined and if he is a real bad apple the state can take their license and that works until they can find someone else and get them licensed.

I wish there were a way that races could be run and that all the animals involved would run without any medications.  Humans don't do very well in this category either.  Lance Armstrong and A Rod and more than a few other baseball players have had their careers blown up by using drugs.  Better living through chemistry???  The issues are kind of blurry and the business model in sports these days probably quietly says "just don't get caught".

A second article relates to Dr. Oz.  I must admit that I have watched that show.  The feature article in the Herald says that Oz has become an actor playing the role of a doctor.  The media is full of info saying certain vitamins, vegetables, and fruits will make you live longer and happier. The  Dr. Oz Show is entertaining but there should probably be a disclaimer running at the bottom of the screen for the length of the show

Maybe you should turn off the TV and go out for a walk
