It's All About the "U"

In my early 40's an admissions counselor from the University of Miami came to my office to talk about what it would take to get one of my kids to enroll.  I was puzzled by this visit because I was single and had no children but the conversation was interesting anyway.

I told the fellow that on my salary which was comfortable but not great, I would advise my children if and when, that they should go to FIU or FSU or another state school because it would be more affordable.  I told him that on my salary or the salary of a teacher, a private school tuition was beyond my pay grade.  Back then tuition was about $10,000 per semester, now it is about $20,000 per semester.

He confidently said that they could put together a package for qualified students that would make attending the University of Miami similar in cost to attending one of the state universities

Today I got an email from UM announcing a legacy admission forum. "As admission to the University is becoming more selective, it's important that we take exceptional care in evaluating legacy applications".

Blossom Johnson, a counselor in the registration office, was happy to enroll me after she looked at my transcript from ISU.  $1,000 was a lot money in 1971, but it was nice to go to school in a place where both semesters were spring semesters.

I live near campus and visit the bookstore occasionally.  The students sure seem more serious these days and the "U" must have an outreach office or two in China.  Forty years is a long time.  Graduating from UM has a better reputation than the University of Phoenix.

But the idea of having a legacy forum reminds me of Animal House, not the Whitten Library or the Ashe Building.
