Monday After Sunday Last
Randy claimed a new horse for his barn immediately after a race a couple of weeks ago at Hialeah Park. He also had a horse running in the same race so he needed some help taking the horses back to his barn after the race. Seems there is always somebody that will do you a favor for a double sawbuck at the track.
Both horses finished off the board. The claim stumbled badly out of the gate but the jockey was able to hold on. Did I Zoom who won his last race did not realize how fast you need to run to win a race if he was going to win today.
Ditto came back ok and was eating almost like normal the next day. The red filly really scraped up her knees, but otherwise seemed ok after the race. Just about every horse seems a little hung over after a race but they don't talk very well so you just watch them closely until they sort of tell you this is boring let's go for a run.
Last Sunday Randy said he wanted to take the red filly out to the track for a little exercise on Monday morning.
The scrapes on her legs had healed or so it seemed to me as she came out to the track with Randy accompanying his exercise rider on a shaggy roan ex-thoroughbred who looked like he just got off a van from Manitoba.
Giving a horse a hair cut might seem simple enough but you need reinforcements for your clippers handy because any horse is a big animal. And the track had not released purse money for races in December because the results of the drug tests had not come back so cash goes for food for your animals and other essentials.
The race track chaplain was watching the horses coming and going, the clocker who records the times of horses that needed workouts for the program sat in a lawn chair, Randy on his hard working pony and another groom, and myself were the only ones on the grandstand apron and it was quiet except for the sound of three horses that were out for some exercise.
The red filly with the big butt galloped by us and she looked alright to me. Randy liked the way she ran and had a little conference with the exercise boy after the workout was over. The red filly stood quietly on the track for about as long as it would take for a picture in the winner's circle and then off through the tunnel for a bath and a hoof cleaning and some more walking on a whirly gig of sorts before they go back to the barn that is really a temporary tent structure for something to munch on.
Maybe the track owners will build more permanent housing for horses and horse people soon, but their big priority is getting the casino areas completed ASAP because without one there wouldn't be the other.
And so it goes.
