Thoughts on the Debt Crisis and Politics

This is one more time the vaunted two party system has already failed this country.  Saturday night I listened to one senator after another say we needed to raise the debt ceiling and then go off depending on their politics to say we need to lower the deficit, reduce spending, tax the rich, protect the poor, elderly, defend medicare, medicaid and lots of other things.

Earlier in the week, the Pew Center released a study about the wide gap in wealth between ethnic groups in this country.

The median afro american household has less than $7,000 in wealth, while the median anglo family has about $123,000 in wealth.  There were also statistics that the weathiest are getting wealthier faster than ever before.  In Florida which has some of the richest zip codes in the country, the unemployment rate in Miami Dade County is a little over 13%.  Tourism jobs are rebounding but there is still a need for efforts to grow the economy and stabilize things.

The politics of public finance are one thing, the politics of the tea party are something else again, and the art of compromise that is sorely needed is absent.

Both parties are scared shit less of actually announcing where actual cuts might come from.  This is the ultimate reason for the lack of the deal on the debt.  One man's idea of waste is a vital program to another.  This is the reason we have gotten to this place.

It's peachy to compromise when you think you can fight wars, provide seniors drug benefits and lower taxes at the same time.  Promoting home ownership for people with no income, no jobs, and no assets and then wondering why the banking system and the lousy housing market exists is another delusional political idea.  And yet we are afraid to tax the few people who made money contributing to this situation or profited from this kind of speculation.

The democrats never saw a program that they didn't like and even if it turned out to be a turkey they never seem to be able to stop spending on it.

I can understand people in politics and out of politics that don't trust this system that has been gamed and continues to be gamed to this day.

There needs to be some honor somewhere.  The current republican party that has also participated in the process that has ballooned the deficit needs to be responsible and participate in a more balanced approach to governing.

Secondly the tax code is not functional in an atmosphere where large companies are in the pay to play game.  And the players complain that they can't create jobs because of uncertainty

If you were alive in 2007-2009 you probably had your wealth take a big hit and who wants to go through that situation again.

Sadly there does not seem to be any stomach for compromise amongst the current political class.  Who wants to do what is unpopular but necessary.  If you can't figure out how to honor previous obligations, I question your judgement going forward.
